Fish Found in Perth, Western Australia

If you are looking to get into fishing, one of the best places in the world for you to go is Perth, Western Australia. There are so many different fishing locations along the Swan River, off the coast with a rod and via boat and there are so many different types of fish that you can find. Here are some tips on the different types of fish that you will find in Perth and some of the best places to find those fish.

What Types of Fish Are In Perth?

There is no lack of variety when it comes to the types of fish that you can catch when you are fishing in Perth. Here is just a short list of some of the most popular types of fish, along with descriptions as to what they look like so that you can identify them when you catch them.

-          Groper. Groper is a family of Demersal fish that have oval shaped bodies that lead into a fin. They come in a variety of types, including the Western blue, Eightbar and the Baldchin, and can be anywhere from 7 to 39kg.

-          Snapper. The Queen Snapper, better known as the Blue Morwong, is the most common type of snapper in Perth. There are also pink snappers and ruby snappers; all types of snapper can grow up to 10kg in weight.

-          Perch. Perch are a smaller type of fish, usually flatter and known for their large eyes.

-          Trout. Trout are an incredibly common type of fish, and are quite delicious, if you plan on using them for eating. They have a total of five fins (not including the tail) and are longer than they are wide. Varieties include Barkcheek and Common Coral.

-          Rockcod. Rockcod are a type of white fish that are shaped, in a way, like a torpedo. They are very long and skinny. The bottom part of their jaw juts out, and their tail fin is shaped like a fan. Types include goldspotted, blackspotted, potato, and a variety of others.

So, as you can see, there are a lot of different types of fish that you may come across. Obviously, some are protected species, so you want to be sure to understand what you’re looking for and what you want to make sure that you avoid when you do your research.

Where are the Best Places to Fish?

First off, the very best place to fish is Blackwall Reach in my opinion. Because of where it is located, and how deep the water gets, you can get a huge variety of fish there, from fish that are usually in rivers to even some salt water fish. The area is easy to fish in and you will often get a lot of great catches in the process.

There are, of course, other places that you need to check out as well. Another popular spot is Hillarys, specifically in the area of the South Rock Wall. The water is clear, so you can see the fish while you’re fishing, and there aren’t a lot of rocks and coral to worry about. You could also go to Two Rocks, which is a beautiful beach that you can fish at during the summer. Two other areas that you will want to check out include Rottnest Island and North Mole (Fremantle).

So, as you can see, there is a huge variety of locations where you can any type of fish in Perth, Western Australia. If you go out and find these beautiful places, you too can get some delicious fish that you and your family can enjoy. Just remember – in some places, fishing may be restricted during certain times of the year because they take that time to restock. Do research before you go and check things out.
