Fishing Spots for Kids in Perth

Kids love fishing and what better place to do it than Perth and surrounding Western Australia.  Perth is lucky enough to have some of the best fishing spots in Australia. Obviously kid-safe fishing spots are needed to ensure everyone has a great time.  Here is a list of the top fishing spots for kids in Perth and WA:

Hillarys Boat Harbour – Here you can catch tailor, king whiting and skippy and it’s nice and safe for the kids.  You can also enjoy the boat harbour, restaurants, AQWA, swimming and of course bbq’s to cook your catch.  In the early evening the fishing jetty is always full of keen kids trying to catch bream, skippy, herring, whiting and even crabs.

Fremantle Harbour – Another great location for kids fishing and plenty to do around the same area if the fish aren’t biting…but they usually are in Fremantle.  Bream, tailor, herring and skippy are your most likely catches in Fremantle and good for the kids as they are little fish but you can also catch larger fish such as mulloway, flathead and sometimes even whiting, garfish and mackerel.  Behind the E Shed markets in Fremantle is a good spot for kids to pull in mackerel. A tip is to use some burley as well to create fishy interest.

Point Walter – Excellent for kids fishing in Perth as it’s nice and flat, shallow and has an awesome sand bank you and the children can fish from.  Fishing at Point Walter in the early morning is fantastic and great for the kids as they don’t have to suffer the hot afternoon sun.  Flatheads are caught here.

Quinny

Trigg Beach – There is a little reef beach on the right hand side of Trigg beach near the infamous Blue Hole where you can catch mullet.  Although the Blue Hole has a bad reputation for being dangerous as it’s a permanent rip the shallow reef I am talking about is safe for kids to fish as it’s generally calm.  Just be cautious though.

The Swan & Canning Rivers – Although you will catch a lot of blowies, this is actually a positive as kids love catching fish, any fish.  Blowies will keep their interest and help them work on their casting and retrieving techniques.  Use blowies as fishing training for when they are bigger and want to actually eat their catch.  For us adults catching blowies is a pain but for kids it’s a thrill, let them go for it. You can catch bream and flatheads in the river too though so not all is lost.

Woodmans Point – Just south of Coogee Beach. Nice jetty where you can catch butterfish, snapper and tailor. A tip is to use the little crabs at Woodmans Point as bait, the fish love them. Great boat ramp here too for those of you with a boat.  There is a playground, shallow water and bbq’s, all the stuff you need to make kids happy.

Bicton (John Tonkin Park) – There is a little beach here with some flat bits for fishing.  If your kids get bored, which of course they will, there is a playground right next to it.  Bonus.
Kids Fishing

Pelican Point Jetty (Matilda Bay) – Near the sea scouts.   Awesome fishing spot for kids as it’s quiet, has a fantastic view and there is grass and beach for the kiddy’s to play on.  There are blowies here but you can also catch bream on a hand line or rod.

North Mole Fremantle – There are disabled platforms for kids to fish off here which are safe but I wouldn’t recommend letting them fish from the rocks as this can be dangerous.

Palm Beach Jetty, Rockingham - You can catch heaps of small fish (or bait fish) from this south of the river jetty so it's good for kids learning to fish in Perth and to reel them in. In saying that I have also seen people recently reel in shark and mulloway here but it's rare these days.  The jetty is a bit high compared to some jetties around Perth so not that great for kids hand reels, rods are better. You can spot some good stingrays here though, great for the kids.

Port Bouvard, Dawesville – You can fish either side and again there are platforms for kids or disabled - use burley and prawn and you should catch some fish.  Herring, bream and tailor are the most likely and even mulloway if you are lucky. On a really good day you can also catch skippy, salmon and whiting.  I have seen some stingrays here too so if you see one show the kids, they love watching rays in the water. Try a small hook with some shelled prawns and I guarantee some hooked fish.

Coogee Beach Jetty – Ammo jetty as it’s called is a top spot for kid fishing and swimming, although watch out for the stingers. You can catch spanish mackerel, tailor, yellowtail, herring, whiting and even mulloway.

Long Point, Port Kennedy – You can catch whiting, flathead, butterfish, herring, yellow tail.

Lancelin – Only an hour north of Perth, lots of fish and crays and calm oceans for the little ones.

The Narrows Bridge, Perth – Your are likely to catch flathead, bream and tailor and you will be undercover if it rains.  Parking is close by too which is always a bonus with whingey kids.
