Why Fish and Chips Are So Popular With Australians

One of the best ways to eat fish and seafood is deep fried.  Fish is an incredibly popular meal all over Australia, mainly because it is so easy to get access to the types of fish that we enjoy. Because of the popularity and accessibility, there are lots of different dishes that we enjoy as a result. One of the most popular dishes, however, is an old classic that can be found all over the world: fish and chips. Let’s take a look at why fish and chips are popular with Australians and are popular all over the world as well.

What Are Fish and Chips?

Fish and chips are a pretty basic dish, when you think about it. The main star of the meal is the fish. Usually a type of white fish (since they fry better and have a firm texture), the fish is best when it is fresh. The cook will put it in some sort of batter (depending on the restaurant or the individual that is cooking up the fish) and then will fry it, either in a deep fryer or in a pan, once again, depending on the preferences and the protocol of the place where it is happening. Many times, the fish used is cod or halibut, but you may see other types of fish used as well depending on where you are located in the country.

Then, of course, you’ve got the “chips.” In certain areas of the world (namely, the United States), these are referred to as “French Fries.” Chips are thickly sliced potatoes (usually sliced into spears or coins) that are deep fried. Sometimes, they’ll put a seasoning on top as well, depending on where you are getting the chips from. The chips add some depth to the meal, because as you know, even fried fish can be incredibly light and not always the most filling. The chips give you a carbohydrate that helps to fill you up and round out the flavor.

The combination of these two flavors has made fish and chips popular in Perth and all over the world. As you may expect, you may find different iterations of them depending on where you are located and what country you are eating them in, but in general, these are the basics and they are a classic. People all over the world will go to multiple places in order to find the best fish and chips.

Where Can I Find Them in Perth?

Fish and chips are quite popular in Perth, especially because of how close the area is to large bodies of water full of delicious types of fish. Many of the fish in this region fry up incredibly well, which is why they are used in fish and chips on a regular basis. Seriously, if you look around at pretty much any restaurant in Perth, you will be able to find fish and chips and it will likely be fresh fish that was caught within the past 48 hours. What more could you ask for out of such a delicious meal?

If you’re looking for fish and chips in Perth, you can also be adventurous and make them on your own. The fishing in Perth is amazing, and you can catch many varieties of fish from the sea and freshwater areas. Consider making up your own recipe and trying out different mixtures of things in order to get the best flavor. Fry up some potatoes on the side and you’ve got delicious fish and chips like no other. So try it for yourself, either from your favorite restaurant or from your own kitchen.
